Olivos

Olivos History

Olivos

The history goes back as far as 1580 when Juan de Garay shared out the land. However it was only settled at the beginning of XVIII century. There are documents in the city of Buenos Aires dated February 19th, 1779, where we found a name for the area "Paraje de los Olivos" (Olivos Whereabouts". Cattle farming was strongly promoted at the beginning of the XIX centruy in the Prov. of Buenos Aires, together with crops, it is at this time that families started moving out to live in the area. Some of the first settlers are Hermán Tauxillewitz de Winnberg and María Vicent, both Polish.

The village was called Mitre de los Olivos but for all the locals it was known as Olivos. The train arrived in June 1863, the first school was built in 1867 and 4 years later the other station called General Bartolomé Mitre. In1888 the first law court was approved and in 1905 the county of Vicente López was created and Olivos its main village.

Olivos Port

Location: Km 15,900 Río de la Plata Coastal Channel, right bank. Latitude: 34º30´10” S, Longitude 58º28´05” W.

Between Alberdi and Corrientes Sts., Olivos Port has a 278mts reinforced concrete dock. The depth is 1,50 at a 5mts distance of the dock and 2,00 when you reach the 10mts. With normal winds, it has relative incidence because of the sheltered environment. Alterations only occur in cases of “Sudestada” (south-east winds).

The tide runs 6 hours (high or low), the speed is of 11km/hs and affects especially the coastal and port-access channel. The port-access channel is 1.2mts deep. Mooring system: fixed bitas. There is no actual mooring system as such. The usual way to operate is with sand or rolling stones. The port doesn’t have electric service (only dock’s lights). There aren´t any special fire systems. Ships allowed to operate: the maximum length is about 70mts (the biggest ship actually operating is in the order of the 66mts). Arm: 15mts (limited by port-access channel’s width) Draught: 4 feet next to the dock. The port is actually prepared to moor up to 5 sand ships (there are 5 unloading displays). The main nautical clubs of the area Yacht Club Olivos and Club Nautico Olivos that have moors, facilities and schools for kids, youths and adults.

Tren de la Costa

With 11 stations along River Plate’s coast, Tren de la Costa travels across different sites from Olivos up to Tigre. Although nowadays it is promoted as a tourism train because of the attractive stations and the pleasant sceneries, the once known as “Tren del Bajo” (it´s route is sloped down to the riverside) and it runs across the Vicente López, San Isidro, San Fernando and Tigre districts. Additionaly, it represents a safe and modern service utilized daily by local people. Most stations have lovely restaurants and coffee stores, there are cultural activities for all ages, supermarkets and a distinguished outdoor commercial center with cinemas in San Isidro. The trip ends in Tigre, close to the Parque de la Costa (main amusement park) and the imposing Casino de Tigre.

Olivos has the first 3 stations of the trip.
Olivos Station: The head station. Located 1 block from the Presidential Residence (Maipu Avenue, between Ramseyer St. and Marconi St), theres a pedestrian bridge over the avenue connecting Olivos and Mitre Station (direct train line going to the city centre). Parking and commercial area.
Borges Station: Located in the corner of Ricardo Gutierrez and Catamarca Sts., in the center of Olivos residential area. Composed by Borges square and the refurbished York Cinema, the station has a lovely green environment ideal to take a walk or have breakfast in a coffee store.
Libertador Station: Only 4 blocks from the dock, there’s a glazed pedestrian bridge over Del Libertador Avenue that has an imposing façade and communicates the both sides, one including a supermarket and the other with a warehouse shopping center and parking. Beside “Tren de la Costa”, TBA Train has 2 stations located in Olivos. One corresponding to the Retiro-Tigre and other to the Retiro-Mitre line

RAMAL RETIRO – TIGRE (TBA)
The Retiro–Tigre line connects Dowtonwn Buenos Aires with Tigre (Delta) across the neighborhoods of Belgrano, Núñez, Vicente López, Olivos, La Lucila, Martínez and Acassuso between others. The modern train has air conditioning and music. Olivos Trains Station is located in the corner of Corrientes and Azcuénaga St., 1 block from Del Libertador Av. Frecuency: 8 minutes.

RAMAL RETIRO - BARTOLOMÉ MITRE (TBA)
The Retiro – Bme. Mitre line travels from Olivos (Vte. López) to Retiro (Downtown Buenos Aires) in approximately 25 minutes across different neighborhoods like Belgrano, Colegiales and Palermo. Mitre, head station of this line is located 1 block from the Presidential Residence over Maipú Av. and is connected with the head station of Tren de la Costa (Olivos-Tigre) by and imposing bridge over the avenue.
Frecuency: 20 minutos.

Car Travelling

If you’re coming from Downtown (Capital) to Olivos by car, the main access is via Avenida Del Libertador (if going to areas next to the river) and Avenida Maipu (if going to any of the upper neighborhoods).

Some things to be reminded of: middle lanes in Avenida Del Libertador change ways to avoid traffic jams depending the on the time. From 8hs to 10hs there’s an additional lane going from Olivos to Downtown, from 17 to 21hs the additional lane turns into the opposite way (from Downtown to Olivos).

It is because of this reason that when the traffic lights are flashing to turn either left or right in Vte. Lopez, Olivos or La Lucila, you must proceed from the outside lane. On the Autopista del Sol highway, the exits to Olivos are Malaver, Villate, Ugarte and Pelliza Streets (from Downtown to North)

Historical Review
It’s first settlers were the Guaraní Indians, whose main activity was agriculture along with hunting and fishing. The history of San Isidro begins in 1580 when Juan de Garay distributes the land located north of Santísima Trinidad, today known as the city of Buenos Aires. What was called “Pago of the Coast or Monte Grande” is today known as the San Isidro district. In his memoirs, Garay recalls that he crossed paths with a Spanish Captain, Domingo de Acassuso, who was quite a dim fellow and that promised to build a chapel in honor of San Isidro, and as a result becoming the main origin of the district. Today nothing remains of the first chapel constructed in 1707, but its location was respected and in its place stands the Cathedral of San Isidro. By the end of the XVIII century San Isidro was already important, its territory included the present districts of Vicente Lopez, San Fernando, part of 3 de Febrero and also Belgrano. In all these years, the land destined for farming happened to be the place of rest and leisure of the families of the Buenosairean aristocracy. Additionally, important residences surrounded by immense gardens were constructed that gave San Isidro that particular aspect that with time got to distinguish it.

Transports

Tren de la Costa - Olivos

TREN DE LA COSTA
This train, bordering the river banks, was the first train brought to Buenos Aires, by the British Railways. This line was cancelled about 30 years ago because it proved unprofitable. About 10 years ago a corporation bought the rights to work for a few years. They turned it into a kind of a tourist train between Olivos and Tigre, with 11 stops/stations in between. The old English style stations were refurbished and some made new.The old stations have a coffee shop and a small gift shop and in most cases a small kiosk that sells candy and cigarettes. It carries about 200 people per unit. Since it is an electric train that works with a overhead trolley, it is very silent.

Pilar

History of Pilar

Pilar is one of the fastest growing areas of the northern part of Buenos Aires. Its known as a great place for playing polo and horseback riding.

Pilar was first founded in 1580 by Juan de Garay when he distributed lands known then as "Suertes de estancias" (Luck of Estancia is the direct translation) amongst his fellow travellers. Á sailor called Antonio Bermudez was alloted "Suerte No.8" (Luck No.8), an enormous strip of land which today would be Pilar district.

Through the years the lands changed owners and were split, till in 1687 the owner Mr.Francisco Gómez de Saravia married María Ocampo y Agüero o Cabezas and in their home they worshiped the Virgin del Pilar.

Through the years Pilar was often a meeting place for different reasons, political or religious. In 1820 the Treaty of Pliar was signed there and it marked the beginning of the federalismo which ended many years of civil unrest between different parties in the country.
